Apu Bagchi for Independent Mayor of Bedford

 

About

Apu Bagchi was born and brought up in Kolkata (Calcutta), India. After obtaining his first degree from Calcutta University, he left India for further study, first in Germany and then in London. Apu met his wife, Cynthia who comes from Bedford, in London and they married in 1968. After a few years, working in various establishments, Apu decided to join the teaching profession. They came to live in Biddenham in 1970 and Apu joined Mander/ Bedford College of Higher Education in 1972.

Apu joined City & East London College as a Senior Lecturer in 1983. He obtained an M.Sc. Research degree on Social Policy from Cranfield University in 1985. He became a Faculty Head at a large FHE college in Wolverhampton in 1987. He has always been active in politics and became a Borough Councillor in 1990, representing Castle Ward. He became Mayor of Bedford in 1996/7. Two highlights of his Mayoral year were taking an under-16 cricket team to Calcutta, and the royal visit by the Queen to Bedford.

Apu left his full-time teaching post in 1993 and joined the Open University as a Tutor for Race, Education and Society while also working as a freelance researcher/trainer in the field of Social Policy.

Apu has three children, Ronjon, Anton and Tanya – all went to Biddenham Upper School and he has two grandchildren, Elliot and Oscar. Since 1997, he and his wife have been living in Bushmead Avenue in Bedford. He enjoys both Indian and European classical music, loves cricket and dabbles with international cooking.
